How to Measure for Your Custom Chair Mat
Posted on
To order a custom chair mat, make a simple drawing and write accurate measurements on it. It does not need to be to scale. It needs clear labels.
1. Sketch the shape
Draw the outline of the mat you need (rectangle, lip under the desk, L-shape, or another shape).
Your drawing has to close as one shape. That means the measurements on opposite sides must add up to the same total:
- Add every horizontal number across the top. That total must match the sum of every horizontal number across the bottom.
- Add every vertical number down the left side. That total must match the sum of every vertical number down the right side.
If those two pairs do not match, the shape will not cut correctly. Fix the drawing before you order.
2. Measure each section
Use a tape measure and write every length on the drawing. Label each side clearly. Include any part that tucks under the desk (the lip). Plan on about 10 inches of lip so the chair rolls onto that section smoothly.
For smaller sections, including the lip, round down to the nearest whole inch. For example, if you measure 25.5 inches, write 25 inches. That gives a little clearance so the mat installs without bumping furniture.
3. Double-check your measurements
Confirm opposite sides add up to the same totals. Fix any mismatch before you order.
4. Find the overall size
Add the horizontal pieces for overall width. Add the vertical pieces for overall length. That overall size is the footprint of the finished mat, including the lip.
5. Pick a sheet size that fits
We cut mats from standard sheets. Choose a sheet that is at least as large as your overall width and length. In the Custom Mat Builder, the size you apply is that sheet size (it sets the price). Then you enter the cut shape on top of it.
When your drawing is ready, use the Custom Mat Builder for standard patterns, or Upload Your Design if the shape is unusual.
